Improper Lashings

This is the most common cause of cargo shift / loss of containers. In the recent past we have had a few cases of cargo shift, including collapse of container stow. In one instance a stack of containers went overboard. Despite our many reminders we still find instances where this vital aspect has been overlooked. The five photographs on this page show the mistakes which were observed during inspection of one vessel:

  1. Turnbuckle attached to ladder rung as the eye was frozen in place.

  2. Lock nut not tightened.

  3. Old D - shackle left in place.

  4. Makeshift pin used in lieu of original pin of the turnbuckle.

  5. Turnbuckle attached to base of other turnbuckle instead of to the lashing eye.
